  1. I am looking at buying a 28 foot Tollycraft Royal Express like Jolly Man. Any tips which I should be aware of? What is the price range on these boats? it is a 1970 in great shape. Thanks for your help.

  2. Hi Nick,

A few things I would pay particular attention to would be fuel tanks.

If the fuel tanks are original, there’s a good chance they are steel. I had to replace mine a few years back, and the only reasonable way to do so was to pull the engines. That, in itself isn’t a too big of a deal, just time and money.

Other than that, these boats are tough, and were well built. A great little cruiser with a lot of style, in my opinion.

I suggest checking out the Tollycraft Boating Club http://www.tollyclub.com. You’ll be able to find a lot of info on the forums as well as a fun group of boaters! The website is http://www.tollyclub.com . I run that site for the club, and right now it is down due to a hacker, but it should be up and running again soon…

    Happy Cruising!

  3. Another ’68-70 Tolly Express wannabe here – [Q] How does the Pli-Cor hull hold up after 45 years ? What to look for when surveying an older Pli-Cor hull ? Love your site. John – Bellevue

  4. Glad you enjoy the site- it’s a lot if fun to keep, and a great way to share and look back on my travels.

As far as I know, the hulls hold up well. There’s no wood to rot, so the biggest concern I would think would be water between the layers of glass. I’m not aware of any real blister problems.

Just get a good survey. You’ll need it for insurance at the very least.

    Cheers!

  5. Nick , I have a line on one if you are still in the market for a 28′ tollycraft . It could actually be a R-Express as it has no flybridge 914 443 9861

  6. Hi Steve, My wife and I thoroughly enjoy every one of your videos and look forward to new ones that might be forthcoming. I am a lifelong boater but mt wife is not so I have used your videos to introduce her to the fun destinations of the PNW. We have a 2002 Bayliner 2859 Classic named OHANA based in Kingston and I believe that it is designed to replicate the fabulous Tolly Express that you had and is so well suited to cruising the NW. You do such a great job with your relaxing videos and have stirred up fond memories for me of many of the places you visit. I have kayaked Desolation and Pendrell Sound and traveled between Seattle and British Columbia paper mills as a tug captain. I hope all is well with you in these trying and crazy times and we look forward to hopefully crossing paths on the water! Keep those fun videos coming!

    Safe cruising,
    Ben Sabin

  7. Thanks Ben! I’m so happy that you’ve enjoyed my videos, and really appreciate your message. I hope to get back to making more videos soon. We are certainly fortunate to have the beautiful PNW to explore, and I look forward to us all being able to spread out a little when things open up a bit. Hope to see you out there somewhere!

    Cheers,
    Steve
