Windy…

I guess this is technically a “boating” trip. Not on my boat, but one of the big green and white ones owned by the state.

This morning, I woke to the sounds of garbage cans, lawn furniture, and whatever else may have gotten free thrashing around outside the house from the strong winds that blew through the night and the previous few days. I decided – on a whim, as I often do, to get on the ferry to Friday Harbor to check out the wind-driven rough water.

Within minutes of initiating launch sequence, I was out the door and en route to the ferry terminal, where I boarded MV Yakima.

Trondheim

It’s hard to believe that I have been on this trip for over two weeks- time has definitely gone by quickly. I have been on the move a lot and have seen a lot.

I have met several more relatives, and have definitely been made to feel like part of the family. It has been exciting to help connect relatives living in the same city that have never met.

Trondheim is much smaller than Oslo, and I haven’t spent much time in the city, but I look forward to doing some more exploring and taking pictures. I have located some houses that my great-great grandparents lived (according to the 1875 Census and 1900 census records), and would like to go see them. I know that at least one of the houses is still standing.

I visited Vår Frue Kirke, the church where my great-great grandparents married and my great grandfather and his siblings were baptized. The original part of the church was built around 1200.

Today I am meeting a new family of relatives that I have been very excited to meet. This journey continues to be one amazing experience after another.

Celebrating 100 years

It's not very often that you get to celebrate somebody's 100th birthday, and I guess I can count the number of 100 year-olds I know on… well, one finger.  This weekend I had the pleasure of joining scores of other admirers to help celebrate R.M. "Tolly" Tollefson's milestone birthday.

Coverage by The Peninsula Daily News

On Saturday, January 22, nearly 180 people packed Port Ludlow's Bay Club for a lunch celebration, where the guest of honor was warmly greeted with a standing ovation by Tollycraft enthusiasts, friends, family, and former employees.  Although physically tired, Tolly was quick to recognize old friends and former employees he had not seen in years- exchanging hugs and inquiring about their families.  He shared some touching remarks with the group, closing by reminding everyone to "keep on cruising".

Later, an exhibit at the Northwest Maritime Center featured pictures and memorabelia from Tolly's 100 years and his boat-building legacy.  The walls were lined with old drawings, photographs, and sketches.  I was proud that Jolly Mon was among the collection of well-loved examples of Tolly's work.

Among the works presented at the exhibit were several of Tolly's "Dream Boats".  After retirement, Tolly drew a collection of boats that were never built, except in his imagination and creativity.
