Boating in the San Juan Islands | Around Shaw Island

With a few days (in a row) of spring weather and a few days off from work, I decided to seize the opportunity to get away.  I didn’t really feel like going very far, and even though I’ve spent a lot of time cruising the San Juans, there are quite a few places I’ve motored past on the way to other destinations.

So I came up with a “plan”.  I’d take a ride around Shaw Island…  and take three days to do it.

Shaw Island is a rural island community in the San Juan Islands with a population of 165.  The total land area is 7.7 square miles, and aside from a seasonal grocery store, the island has no commercial amenities.

In my latest video, I visit three popular anchorages on Shaw Island in the most pleasant spring weather to visit some familiar spots and a few new to me.  Thanks for watching!

  1. Steve – I’ve really enjoyed your videos. We keep a boat at Dagmar’s in Everett and are planning to do a lot of cruising this Summer. We’re looking to the Gulf Islands and Desolation Sound. Your videos are very informative and fun to watch – you’re a natural! Perhaps we’ll pass each other on the water sometime. Keep up the great work! Looking forward to more videos!

  2. Steve,

I’ve watched a few of your videos, INCREDIBLE STUFF!

Your experience is invaluable, especially since we will be departing Portland , OR this morning on our first venture via our vessel to the San Juans.

We will be gone for (6) months, so needless to say, quite an adventure awaits.

We’d really love to meet up with you at some point on our journey.

  4. Hey Steve,
Just watched your video for the first time. I love the fact that you’ve sought out the quieter places to go and that you include all the info. I also love the respect you show for the people/critters who live where you visit.
This is my fourth season on my Cal 2 34 and the one when I learn to singlehand her. I’m looking for places exactly like this to go and all your information makes planning a trip easy.
I’ll definitely keep following you on your website and watching your videos. Thanks for putting it out there and doing it in a way that’s about boating, beauty and respectful exploring. It’s really refreshing to find this on your tube.
    I’ll see you out there,
